Commissioner Dean/Westside Break Ground on New Challenger League Field

An official ground breaking ceremony with County Commissioner Mike Dean and representatives from Westside Park took place on Wednesday, November 14th. Commissioner Dean pledged $50,000 at Opening Day ceremonies earlier this year. As a result, the first phase of the project which will create a daylight playable field will be complete by the end of December. During the ceremony, Commissioner Dean also pledged a second $50,000 to help finish the project by funding a new press box complete with new handicapped accessible restrooms. Once opened, the Challenger Field will become home to Little League’s Challenger Division, a program designed specifically for mentally and physically challenged children ages 5 through 18.

On behalf of the Westside Athletic Association Board of Directors, Parents, Players and Alumni, we would all like to thank Commissioner Mike Dean and the Mobile County Commission for their generosity and hard work to help support this very worthy cause! Should anyone be interested in becoming more involved with the Challenger Program, please contact the park at 251-633-9853.

Commissioner Dean Helps Make The Challenger Field a Reality
As announced last spring, Mobile County Commissioner Mike Dean pledged to Westside that he would help the park fund the construction of a Challenger League field at Westside Park. The Challenger Program, which is a division of Little League Baseball, is geared specifically for children ages 5 through 18 that are either mentally or physically challenged. Commissioner Dean backed up this pledge with a $50,000 donation towards Phase 1 of the project in 2007. This money, coupled with funds raised by Westside’s Diamond Booster Club, allowed Westside to move forward with the construction in mid-November. Westside is quite pleased to report that Phase 1 is very close to completion now. Designed and constructed by Nick Pratt, the new field and the new program are going to be a fabulous addition to the park!

However, if that is not enough, Commissioner Dean is now providing an additional $50,000 for 2008 to complete the Challenger facility. With the additional funds, a new press box will be designed for the field that will include fully handicapped accessible restrooms on the first floor. The design and permitting for this new building is currently in progress with planned construction to complete early this year.

On behalf of Westside, please extend a heart felt thank you to County Commissioner Mike Dean for making this great project a reality!
