WHAT IS NJROTC?
The Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) is a program designed to instill in high school students the values of leadership, discipline, citizenship, responsibility, and patriotism. NJROTC is a four-year course of study, but students are not obligated to remain in the program the entire four years. Students receive graduation credits in the NJROTC program, just like any other course.
WHAT SUBJECTS ARE TAUGHT?
The NJROTC curriculum includes classes in leadership, naval orientation, naval history, navigation, oceanography, close order drill, physical fitness, and health. Classes meet every school day. Two days per week are devoted to classroom instruction, two days per week are devoted to close order drill/military skills, and one day per week for physical fitness/organized athletics.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF NJROTC?
Students have the opportunity to earn college scholarships. Additionally, any student completing at least two years of NJROTC who desires to enter the military will do so at a higher pay grade. Service academy appointments are also available to highly qualified NJROTC graduates. Perhaps the greatest benefit of the program is that the students will acquire leadership and management skills that will benefit them no matter what career field they choose.
IS THERE A MILITARY OBLIGATION IF I JOIN NJROTC?
Absolutely not. There is no obligation to serve in the military for NJROTC students. In fact, most NJROTC students will never serve a day in the military.
DOES IT COST ANYTHING TO JOIN NJROTC?
NO! All books, uniforms and other supplies are provided at no cost to the students. All field trips, save for small personal expenses, are funded by the Navy.
WHAT ARE SOME ACTIVITIES OF THE NJROTC PROGRAM?
NJROTC students will visit various military installations, learn about life in the military, and have the opportunity to perform some exciting military skills. Cadets will also march in parades, participate in competitions with other JROTC units, go to sea aboard Navy ships, and participate in community service activities. There are also social activities, to include the annual military ball, dining ins, dining outs, and unit picnics. Cadets have the opportunity to join the NJROTC Armed and Unarmed drill teams and Color Guard, which perform and compete frequently throughout the school year at various events. There are also week-long mini boot camps and leadership academies conducted each year. Cadets may participate in as many of these activities as they desire as long as their academic GPA is above 2.0.
IN WHAT WAY IS NJROTC LIKE THE NAVY?
The NJROTC program is structured according to Navy traditions. NJROTC cadets are organized into squads and platoons and have the opportunity to serve in leadership positions. In addition, NJROTC cadets will earn ribbons and medals, which they will wear on their uniforms.
HOW OFTEN DO NJROTC STUDENTS WEAR THEIR UNIFORMS?
All NJROTC cadets wear their uniforms all day at school one day per week. That day is determined by the Senior Naval Science Instructor. Normally Thursdays. There are different uniforms for each season and occasion.
DO I NEED A PHYSICAL TO ENROLL IN NJROTC?
