Area 11 Leadership Academy 2008
By: C/ Eric Gross - 20 June, 2008, Chaparral HS Navy JROTC

"The only safe ship in a storm is leadership" - Faye Wattleton Our Unit is proud to be sending 7 cadets to this years Leadership Academy located in Thousand Oaks, CA.
The cadets attending are Patrick Pizzaro , Andrew Johnson , Brody Thompson , Martin Tessier , William Akana , Christopher Sutton , and Nicholas Hill. From the listed names above, C/ Thompson, C/ Tessier, and C/ Hill have only been in our program for one year with C/ Hill being the newest having only one semester of Naval Science experience.
The honor of being accpeted to this academy is a an accomplishment all in its own. Only the best of NJROTC earn acceptance to attend, averaging around the top 1% of the entire program. Although difficult, the challenges do not stop at the entrance. Accepted cadets will have to quickly adapt to a whole new lifestyle.
The week long academy has a lot to teach the students and not a lot of time to do it in. Long days, difficult training, and stress builds a heavy load for the leadership cadets to cope with. In order to graduate, cadets must pass their inspections (both room and personnel), their platoon drill evaluation, their academic exam, the orienteering course, and their physical fitness test (PFT).
Upon graduation, cadets recieve the respected "Silver Cord". It is the only cord worn on the right shoulder of the NJROTC dress uniforms and proudly represents the leadership of the program.
The important new traits and leadership styles cadets will take back to their respected units after completion of the Area 11 NJROTC Leadership Academy are second-to-none. The success of the graduates is monitored by prominent Naval Science Instructors who serve as the teachers and role models during the training.
