Former Knights return to lend expertise

Date: March 31, 2006 at 09:13

Coach Frank Bennett has been fortunate during his 7 year tenure as director and head coach of the Norfolk Knights to have had the opportunity to coach some very talented athletes who have been loyal to the program. In recent years former players have been happy to return to the Norview High School practice facility and work with younger players showing them drills they have been doing with their college teams. Even Coach Bennett, who spent a few years working as an instructor at the Five Star Basketball Camps enjoys the opportunity to steal a little more knowledge and pick up some tips.
Four players have been especially helpful assistants, David Johnson who is part of one of college basketballs most unforgettable moments when he carried Hampton University Head Coach Steve Merfeld around the court after HU upset #2 seed Iowa State in the 2001 NCAA tournament. Johnson led Hampton University to three Conference championships in 4 years and has been playing professionally for the last two seasons. Also lending a hand has been Kanandi Hall who played at Virginia State University, Chris Wooldridge a two time all South Atlantic Conference selection who recently won a Conference Championship at Catawba and Rodney Young, a starter on a Virginia Wesleyan Basketball team that recently captured a Division III National Championship.
There is probably not a more influencial instructor than one who is already playing at that next level and the Knights are very fortunate for having such loyal alumni.
