Recruiting Checklist for those wishing to play at the collegiate level

Date: September 16, 2009 at 01:10

Here are some important items players need to take care of immediately if they hope to play collegiate sports:

1.
G.P.A. – Find out your Grade Point Average and Class Standing from your guidance counselor. Make sure that you are on track with your GPA and if you are taking the required classes?

2.
FAFSA – Get your pin # early. - http://www.pin.ed.gov/PINWebApp/pinindex.jsp

3.
FAFSA Deadlines http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/
Fill out as early as January of your senior year in high school, but check with your guidance counselor ASAP to find out information regarding the deadlines!

4.
FAFSA Forms - Print out a “Fafsa on the Web Worksheet” (Pre Application Worksheet) and fill it out (to see what info you need, etc.) http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/before012.htm Do this early!

5.
NCAA Eligibility Center (Formerly known as the NCAA Clearinghouse) – Fill out as early as January of your senior year in high school, but to be safe, ask your guidance counselor for the deadline information. There is a $50 fee to register, however ask your guidance counselor if you are eligible for to have the fee waived (this is an option for some). It’s much easier to register on line (you will be given or get to choose a 4-digit ID number). https://web1.ncaa.org/eligibilitycenter/common/

6.
SAT / ACT User Registration - Go on line and register to get your personal home page. The home page will have your profile, track test scores, login info, and membership preferences.

7.
SAT / ACT Test Dates – Find out the dates of the SAT / ACT tests and write them in on your calendar. Take the practice SAT as early as the end of your sophomore year, and take it as many times until you get the score you need (or want). See your guidance counselor for additional information. http://www.kaptest.com/High_School/High_School_Main/hs-home.html

8.
Download your “free” copy of the NCAA Guide for the College Bound Student-Athlete.

9.
NCAA Recruiting Calendar – Print out a copy of the most recent NCAA recruiting calendar. Click on the link below: Then select either Men’s / Women’s Basketball Division I, Division II. http://www.ncaa.org/wps/ncaa?ContentID=447

10.
Showcases / Exposure Camps / Elite Camps – Start looking early for Showcases, Exposure, and Elite camps. Print out all the information, get out your calendar and start planning! This is extremely important – Do not wait until the last minute to register, there may not be any room left and you will not be able to get the dates / times to college coaches to let them know you will be attending.
* See pages 19-20 “The College Showcase” for links to locate showcase / exposure events.

11.
The Letter – Have you started on the letter you will be sending to college coaches. The least you should be doing is to be gathering information in a folder to have it ready to go. For Knights players, Coach Frank has sample letters for your reference.

12.
The Video – Who will video tape? What video camera will you be using? Does the person video taping understand what shot is needed? Did you buy some brand new video tapes?

13.
Get Organized Early: Have you modified / updated the forms included on the CD to get them ready to go? Do you have folders made up so you can easily find information? It pays to get organized early on so that you can concentrate on more important aspects of your goals.

For Knights players, Coach Frank will have handouts at the team banquet with further information. Much of the Knights schedule is based on the NCAA evaluation calender so players can be assured the Knights will fulfill their obligation to their players to attend the top events and stay active during these evaluation periods.
