The Norfolk Knights will be among a list that includes over 200 teams that will participate in the Big Shots Myrtle Beach events to be held July 9-10 and July 11-12. The Knights will be the only local team to participate in both events, of what is being dubbed the best Big Shots event ever. 14 of the ESPN top 50 players will be featured and 43 of the top 60 players in the country will participate. Most of the top AAU programs in the country are attending what is called "the place to be" for teams and players trying to be seen by the over 450 college coaches that will be in attendance including every major Div I school.
Among the participants are nationally ranked teams such as Mac-Irvin Fire from Illinois, Mac Irvin was the focus of a recent ESPN Outside the Lines documentary on AAU vs HS Basketball because of the controversial recruiting tactics involving Wayne Blackshear. Blackshear is among the top recruits in the class of 2011, the 6'8 forward caused much controversy when he transferred from Curie HS to Morgan Park HS (Chicago, ILL) back in Jan. 2009. His AAU Coach Mike Irvin is the head coach at Morgan Park HS and many feel Blackshear was lured there by his AAU coach and Nike who sponsors Mac Irvin. Also among the field is Garner Road from North Carolina which is coached by former Tar Heel guard Donald Williams, Texas D-1 Ambassadors, Nike Team Takeover from Washington DC who the Knights lost to by four points earlier this season, and Boo Williams (Huckaby). Another headline team is defending AAU national champion (16U) All Ohio Red who went 69-1 last season. They won the Boo Williams Invitational back in April and are led by Ohio State recruits Jared Sullinger and top 50 prospect Jordan Sibert. D1 Sports from North Carolina should also draw alot of attention with Kentucky bound John Wall, the #1 player in the nation and cousin of Virginia Spartans/Norfolk Knights guard Tyrice Thomas. Duke bound Mason Plumlee and NC State bound CJ Leslie are among the prospects on the D1 Sports roster.
