Late free throws lift Southern Maryland All Stars over Knights 71-69

Date: May 21, 2008 at 10:13

The Norfolk Knights got off to a slow start in the semi-finals of the College Exposure Shootout in West Virginia spotting the Southern Maryland All Stars a 13-2 advantage before battling back. By half-time the Knights had been able to cut into the lead and tie the game thanks in large part to Keith Cooper and Tracy Elliott who combined for 17 of the Knights 32 first half points.
The Knights fouoght back in the 2nd half in a 16 minute slugfest that saw the lead change hands 11 times. The Knights actually outscored the Maryland AAU state runner-up from the floor in the game as Southern Maryland scored 21 of their 71 points at the free throw line including 9 of their last 12. With just under 4 minutes to play the Knights had a 1 point lead but Brian Daniels was called for a foul on what appeared to be a clean block of a jump shot, that allowed the Maryland based team to get a pair of free throws which were successful and gave Maryland the lead. The Knights answered back but again were called for a shooting foul on a blocked shot allowing for more free throws which Southern Maryland was able to cash in on. In fact, the Knights blocked four of the Southern Maryland All Stars' last six shot attempts but each were called shooting fouls and accounted for all of the Southern Maryland scoring in the final three plus minutes of the game.
Kevin Lewis sparked the Knights tenacious defensive effort with five second half steals and his backcourt mate Brian Daniels scooped up a few steals of his own in a losing cause.
Southern Maryland would go on to win the event later Sunday edging Comfort Designs in a championship game that featured a pair of Maryland AAU national qualifiers.
