Knights finally get in the win column

Date: April 28, 2008 at 10:13

After losing three games in Greensboro, NC just three weeks ago by a combined total of 5 points, including a three point buzzer beater from half court that resulted in a 2 point setback, the 11th grade Norfolk Knights found that same frustration still apparent during the weekend AAU event in Harrisburg, PA.
After getting off to a slow start in game 1 and trailing by as many as 11 points in the first half, the Knights got on track in the third thanks in large part to the shooting of Driscoll Edwards. The sharpshooting combo guard went 5 for 5 from the field in the quarter including 3 three pointers, part of a game high 17 point performance that helped the Knights build the lead to as many as 14 in the second half. The lead slowly dwindled as the homestanding Susquehana Valley All Stars used a smothering half court trapping zone that forced 6 fourth quarter turnovers and set up a 16-6 fourth quater run enroute to a 68-67 come from behind win.
In the second game, the Knights watched helplessly for the 2nd time in five games this season as a buzzer beating desperation shot by thier opponent found it's mark. The Knights used a strong effort by
Tracy Elliott (14 points, 12 rebounds) and Dravon Potillo (15 points) to hold a slim lead in a nip and tuck battle that was close throughout. The Knights had several opportunities to pull away but shot poorly from the free throw line late and missed key close shots in the final minute that allowed McDevitt High School to hang around for the last second heroics. With two seconds left and the Knights clinging to a 1 point lead, the home team from McDevitt High School got some home cooking as a slow fingered clock operator allowed all of this to happen in the final two seconds: Inbounds from the half court to a guard coming off a double screen and receiving the ball near the middle of the court. He dribbles four times and spins while shooting and banks home a game winner in a 60-59 final. That loss marked the second time in five games this season the Knights have been beaten by a long desperation heave. In five losses this season, the Knights have been beaten by a combined total of 8 points. Unfortunately the luck hasn't been the same for the Knights, in the first game of this event the Knights had a buzzer beater that would have won the game. An opposing player appeared to grab the rim or the net as the ball hit forcing the ball to rim out. No basket interference was called however and the Knights string of tough losses was extended.
