Here is the "split 6" defense:

S
C B B C
E B T T B E
O O O 0 O O O

O O

The two inside backers are your studs but the safety needs to be pretty good too. The corners don't play out very far.

Quick Hits: First, select the hole you want to "Quick Hit" and align a back over it. The number of steps back he plays is two more steps than it takes for the QB to reach the hole for the handoff. An example is shown below:

1 222 3 4 5
O O O 0 O O O
O
B1 B2
B3

Let's start with B2. He can run straight ahead and "Quick Hit" the #3 hole. The QB is one step away from the handoff point so the runner is three steps back from the hole (1+2=3). B2 can also "Quick Hit" hole #5 from this same position. The QB turns right and pitches to B2 running away from him. The TE can usually reach the DE long enough for B2 to get outside. B3 is positioned to "Quick Hit" hole # 4. He's playing 5 steps back since the QB is three steps away from the handoff point (3+2=5). B1 isn't aligned over a hole at all, but over the left tackle. He will run straight at the LT and then cut into whichever #2 hole comes open. He's playing four steps back since the QB is two steps away. You can also "Quick Pitch" to this back and have him run #1 with the TE reaching. On a handoff ("Quick Hit") the DE's are not blocked. On a "Quick Pitch" they are. Now! If you're going to run "Quick Hits" you can only have one "Quick Hit" player to each side of the formation. The formation I showed above won't work. Here's why. B2 will get in the QB's way to handoff to B3 if B2 goes forward - And if B2 doesn't go forward, he can't lead block for B3. That's why the formation I showed above doesn't exist. Any time you position two backs for "Quick Hits" to the same side of the formation, the inside back will become an obstacle to handing off to the outside back. So when you design your formation to run "Quick Hits", just put one to each side. Now you can change that rule if you want by putting the "Quick Hit" back in motion. That's the "speed sweep" play. Or you can put the "Quick Pitch" back in motion. That's "Rocket Sweep". Here's a formation for maximum "Quick Hits" and "Quick Pitches":

1 1 2 3 4
O O O 0 O O O
O B3
B1 B2

Your "Quick Hits" are B1 to #2 and B2 to #3. You can "Quick Pitch" B2 to #4 or B1 to #1. To use motion, B3 can Quick Hit #1 (Speed Sweep) or B1 can Quick Pitch #4 (Rocket Sweep) or B2 can "Quick Pitch" to #1 (Rocket Sweep). Thus, the above formation has seven different "Quick" hitting plays to it. If you put B3 in motion away from the QB and throw fast to him, you've got 8. The next step in the design is to fake a "Quick Hit" to get the defense converging on the handoff point - And then give the ball to someone else going the other way. Your 8 plays now become 16. I hope this helps.
