"could you explain what a bucket step is and how to use it/teach it on the line....." A bucket step is where a lineman, usually a tackle, steps backwards on his outside foot and then picks up a defender. It's used to allow a tackle on the weakside to pick up a DE's rush coming from the outside. "we run the sumo drill and the kids fire out and look great! But when it comes time to scrimmage they line up and come off the ball like it was there first time on the field….if they fired out in a scrimmage/game like what they did in our sumo drill we would be great….how do I transfer that intensity from a practice drill to the field of real play? First, it may not be an intensity problem. It may be that you have 1) improper technique or 2) a weak line. Both will result in the kids blocking each other fine but stinking in an actual game. You can measure for improper technique by holding a broom handle 6" over their helmets from their three points in "sumo". If their helmets touch that broom handle during the drill, you have poor technique. To measure for weakness, lay a handshield on the ground in front of a lineman and a tackling dummy beyond that so it looks like this: X X X S P
Where xxx is the tackling dummy, "S" is the handshield, and "P" is the player. Put him in his stance and, without allowing him to take ANY STEPS at all, DIVE OUT over the tackling bag as far as possible. 12's should be able to go 6 feet no problem. If your kids can't move or they're huffing and puffing on the fourth try, they're weak. They have no leg strength. I would suggest you test for these two factors first and then resubmit your question.
