DC Wing T changes

By: Dum Coach

There are some changes we have made to our offensive manual. They are:

1) We are allowing all the backs to play from two point stances. The manual doesn't mention which stance to use because we were using two points for the 8-11's and 3's for the 12-13. However, time trials yesterday showed even the 12's could turn in faster run times from 2 points than from 3's.

2)We are aligning the wingback 11 feet from the near offensive tackle's outside foot. We are using our 10 foot PVC pipes (plus one foot) to position them. The TE's start with one yard splits but can reduce them by one foot or add a foot if this will improve their play. By aligning the wing off the OT, the wing learns to ignore the TE's adjustment.

3) For the third time I have changed the play call for the "Toss". The "Toss" is a DW play and not a wing T play and so it is inconsistent with wing T principals. Technically, we need a "Left" cue in the "36 Toss" call to cue the center and left guard. However, using a "Left" cue also cues the backfield for the wrong direction and the wrong snap count. To correct, we have dropped the "Left" call from the "Toss". It is now just "36 Toss". Left guard is expected to remember to pull and center to block back (We will probably have the LG tap the center to remind him). Snap count is now correct and backfield motion is now correct (And I'm beginning to see why the "Toss" is not in wing T offenses - Still, it's a great play).

4) We added instructions on how to read the defense for calling the proper pass. It's only 3 sentences long (We use fast, simple reads) but I noticed it wasn't in the manual and so added it. Anyone wanting this can ask.

4) In our diagrams the HB shows that he is aligned behind the offensive tackle to his side. That's not quite true. His outside foot is aligned on the inside foot of the offensive tackle. This is done for the "Quick hit" ("33 Quick") and to lead block "23". The HB's depth should allow him to hit the #3 hole on his third step, outside foot first.
