Getting an athletic scholarship. Don't give up!

By: Big Bear

Five years ago, my daughter was playing basketball as a senior on our local high school team. Her high school coach advised her that she wasn't good enough to play college ball, but she was determined to play ball in college.

She identified 20 colleges/universities with women's basketball teams and elementary education programs. She created a resume which included high school g.p.a., ACT and SAT scores. Becky wrote a cover letter to the head coaches expressing her desire to play basketball in college and included a videotape of one of her games. She followed up with phone calls.

The result?

She was offered 13 scholarships, choosing a tiny private college close to home, on a full tuition scholarship. She was named Captain and earned MVP awards after leading her team to the Final Four and Sweet 16 of the NSCAA National Championships.

She has graduated and is starting student teaching this month. Her goal? to teach at the elementary level and coach basketball at the high school level.

The lesson she taught us is having fire in your belly can be more important than natural ability.

A good lesson for any age!
