Coach Criteria (Selection)
By: Coach RonOur Board holds interviews where we ask the same questions to each of the
candidates. The questions deal with the following:
Parental Invovlement - How does the coach plan to get parents invovled
with the organization such as working concessions, fundraisers, etc?
Club Spirit - How does the Coach plan to help create a sense
of excitement and suppotrt for the entire organization?
Asst Coaches - Do they have a staff? Are they willing to take on
new coaches? Will they get their coaches involved with extra
club activities?
Scouting - Do they plan to scout? What do they look for? How do
they pass this info on to the players?
Clinics - We hold 4-6 clinics throughout the off-season...are they
willing to attend along with their assist coaches?
Situation: We give each candidate a situation dealing with the game,
Position selection, parents, etc to see how they would anser the
question.
Much like Coach Dave's earlier post, avoid first year coaches as Head Coaches.
We want to see the Coach dealing with Players, Parents and other Coaches
for a season as an assistant coach first.
Our offense, the numbering system, warm-up drills, tackling drills
and mandatory play rules are already established throughout the club.
We go over the rules to assure the candidate understands and can
accept the guidelines. Since we hold 4-6 clinics throughout the off-season,
we believe we can teach people "X"s and "O"s who are interested in
coaching. We have a pretty good support process for coaches.
Another club in our area has the candidates give a short summary of
why they should be a head coach to all their coaches and then are
voted by their peers.
