TYPES OF WEIGHT DIVISIONS

By: Coach R Smith
Add to Mixx!

In Salt Lake City, Utah I think we have come up with a pretty good system. Although they are looking at adjusting the weights listed below by about 10%-15% next year. All kids can play regardless of weight. We have six divisions by age and identify those over the weight limit as "X" players, interior line on offense or defense. A player can move up an age to remove the "X" or a small player we call them "Z" can move down an age if they are under the "Z" weight.

Groups age X weight Z weight
Gremlin 8-9 76 lbs
Pee Wee 10 90 lbs 61 lbs
Mighty Mite 11 100 lbs 75 lbs
Midget 12 115 lbs 85 lbs
Bantam 13 135 lbs 100 lbs
Junior 14 153 lbs 120 lbs

All players are weighed before the first game. A second weigh in occurs between the first and second game for those that are trying to remove an "X".

A quick note: My son is 9 and weighs 92 lbs. My understanding is he would not be allowed to play Pop Warner because he is to heavy. Under our rules he was able to play his first year at age 8 as a non "X" but will probably be an "X" the rest of his years until High School.
