PULLING LINEMAN?...
By: JT
man, you need to send me a tape of your PRACTICE!!!! haha...we only practice 4 days...1 1/2hrs a day..fridays are only an hour..walk thru, no pads (league rule)....the team you see on the tape from last year is the biggest best team we ve had...when you the team from this year, youll understand....i played guard all my 20yrs of playing...i was small, but slow...i learned to be quick...and i learned how to pull, and who to hit...i learned reach blocks, and crab blocks, cross blocks, traps, pass blocks and look out blocks (thats when your man gets by you and you turn and yell look out!!!) but i have NO idea what a horn block is....getting these guys to fire out, instead of stand up is a major chore in itself..NOONE in our league pulls linemen, cuz they have a hard enough time blocking the gaps as it is, let alone move someone out....i love the concept of the double wing, especially on astroturf.....it will all depend on the players (linemen) that come back next year, and who i can pick up in the draft...it might work with 7th graders, but i cant see 5th graders grabbing this concept in their very first year.....what i MIGHT do, is pull a tackle....depending on who my tackles are....in our league, its opposite of the norm...usually, you have a monster center, two quick guards, and two big tackles...in our league, the guards are big, and the tackles are small...everyone tries to protect the middle as much as possible, and everyone tries to run up the middle as much as possible...the quicker tackles have to deal with lbs, and de....and everyone uses their backs to block...since we are an intro ductory league, thats all we try to do, introduce the basiscs....its easier for them, and us....if we were getting kids, like you are, that have 2-3yrs exp. then, sure.....but, i will TRY anything....but, i will NOT give out your handbook to kids...they'd just use it to beat each other with, and it'd be all over the parking lot, and half the city....these are kids that the cops show up for cuz a couple of them decided to "borrow" grandmas car without her permission (or license), one of our coaches is a "youth counsler"...which translates to deputy sheriff to you & me...they are not dumb kids at all, i dont mean that...but our program is set up to keep it as simple as possible, and not for it to be a "priority" (not my idea, i assure you)....they dont want playbooks, extra practices, extra coaches, or anything special...just somewhere to drop off the kids after school...and let them play football....the upper levels get alot more into x's and o's than we do.....we're lucky they show up to practice at all...(we all have days when theres only 11 or 12 kids total) ...and this year, we were lucky they showed up at games ...had 3 quit by just not showing up for the game...no phone call, no nothing...never had that happen before, ever!!!!! and hopefully, wont happen again......maybe we're taking the wrong approach...we spend 90% of our time just on the fundemental..from stances, to pass catching...not alot of time on actually running plays.....we scrimmage...we go over things on friday, and in pre game on saturday...then we play....we have 2 coaches, and 30 kids, and we all do the best we can....they dont want our league to be any more competitive than necessayr (whatever that means) ....we have good administrator, and good field boss that understand, been there, and are great guys, and bosses...but the league, itself is only set up to say..."this is a football, go play".....its gonna take some time to make it a little more detailed than that.......THATS why im out here...trying to look over the fence to see whats out there...to see how other leagues, and teams run....but, i love football, and i want to learn and teach as much about it to these kids as i can...and for all your help, i thank you...i hope i can convey it to them.....it'll be quite a challenge!!!!! (now THATS some REAL rambling on & on...hahaha)
