police protest: -The Outcome
By: Court
Interesting comments. I think everyone concedes the fact that the game not being decided on the field is unfair to ALL the kids. I'm not sure, though, about the practical aspects of "continuing the game later WITHOUT parents." I for one would be hard to convince that I would be required to travel and drop my kid off at a park, and then go away and NOT stay to watch him play - especially if I had not participated in the fight to begin with. It would create an enforcement nightmare... especially considering the parents involved. (So the parents stand OUTSIDE the fences, and fight OUT THERE?) Unfortunately at this level, in addition to the task of coaching football, the Coaches, in the last analysis, are also responsible for keeping their own sidelines under control - even if it means pulling a team off the field and taking a time out to restore order. Would additional intervention from the coaches have helped prevent the situation from escalating? Hard call to make...hindsight isn't always 20/20. As far as politics to keep the #2 Seed from winning "another" championship....that's anybody's guess, but I doubt it. Being connected with the #1 seed in this tournament, I know for a fact our program doesn't have the kind of influence at the Confernce level to politic our way to a title, even if that were somehow possible. At the risk of sounding overconfident, I would like to think their undefeated streak would have ended even if they had advanced to the title game. The unfortunate part, of course, is that we will never know. However, from our standpoint, I refuse to let the ridiculous actions of another program detract from our own accomplishments on the field. This much has been established with certainty: The parents involved have shamed THEMSELVES, their program, and embarassed their children. In the end, right or wrong, THEIR actions cost them dearly.
