New to coaching

Remember, at any age stress good blocking and tackling. I head coach 60 lbers this year (5 & 6 year olds - they don't get any younger!). Every boy needs to know the basics of a good block and tackle(a good book should spell that out). If a boy knows the basics then he will have a good experience playing the game - which is what it's all about. If he knows how to block and tackle he can "defend" himself and not get knocked around which builds confidence and he then enjoys the experience. Start there and build upon that base - hopefully your head coach has the same or similiar philosophy. If you're an assistant, your head coach will probably be working with and looking out for the "first string". Look to develop your coaching skills with kids who don't have the basics down yet. Ask your head coach to pull those kids aside and give thme the attention and instruction they need - you both learn and benefit
