With the fans
(Noah & Julian) rooting for the parents (Mom Lisa), the parents nearly beat the
girls in what was to be the first of three games with the only score worth
remembering 23-25. Parents showed the girls that they could also jump,
dig, spike, serve, tip, slide, watch the ball hit the floor, crash into each
other, balance the ball on the net, take the ball in the head and elsewhere, and
still rally together in camaraderie and sportsmanship.
In what promised to be a very quiet and humbling car ride home, the parents
acquiesced to the girls' victory but vowed to make a better show of it the next
time. Parents hesitated in putting a date to the rematch until the teams'
physical condition had been reviewed by a geriatric professional. They
also stressed the importance of adding to the existing line-up by scouting
further talent to act as a buffer to the onslaught of the younger players.
Coach Kevin Hellyer, loyalties visibly torn during the event, provided
constructive reinforcement and play-by-play commentary, while sidelined player
Kelsey O’Hara provided outstanding, virtually impartial officiating.
