Durham Attack Girls 15U Black Volleyball Team “played up” at the 16U Tier 1 Challenge Cup at U of T Scarborough on Saturday, January 28th.

In Pool Play, 11th ranked Durham Attack Black got off to a fast start, defeating 3rd ranked Waterloo Tigers 25-22, 25-23.  The younger team surprised the Tigers, especially when each game came down to the final points against a team that had defeated them twice last year, including the elimination match at Provincials.

Next, Attack 15U faced the defending Canada-East champions from last year, Scarborough Vipers. The Vipers would go on to win the Gold medal in this tournament also, but had their hands full with the Attack 15U, winning by a narrow margin 20-25, 22-25.  This left Attack 2nd place in their Pool.

In the Crossover match, Durham eliminated a team from Eastern Ontario, Phenix de Prescott-Russell 25-20; 25-11. Durham then faced another team that had defeated them in higher age group tournament play last year, South County Bandits. South County, the winners in Pool D, won the first game 18-25, but Attack 15U fought back in the second game, never quitting despite trailing the entire game, to finally emerge victorious 27-25. South County rallied to take the tie-break 15-13.

With a touch of irony, the disappointed Attack 15U team had to face the same Waterloo Tigers team in a battle for 5th. The Tigers gained a measure of revenge from the morning match, winning 20-25, 20-25. The 11th seeded Attack 15U’s 7th place finish was good enough to qualify them for the next Tier 1 16U tournament in March.

Next up is the OVA 15U Tier 1 Challenge Cup at Fanshawe College, London February 4th, which will match them against competitors in their own age group.

1. Waterloo Tigers 25-22; 25-23
2. Scarborough Vipers 20-25; 22-25
3. Phenix de Prescott-Russell 25-20; 25-11
4. South County Bandits 18-25; 27-25; 13-15
5. Waterloo Tigers 20-25; 20-25
