It has been an impressive season for the U17 girls with many accomplishments and
tons of memorable moments. This team has a way of recovering when
needed the most. Our pool play has never been our strong point, however,
when it comes down to the crunch, these girls always come through. This weekend
was no exception. Our Friday pool play had us parents shaking our heads.
Losing a match to the Niagara Rapids had Attack scrambling to stay in Tier 1.
The girls knew what had to be done and took the next game against U17 DRVC in
two straight sets, placing them 2nd in their pool.
Day 2 would
see the girls struggle again. Our first game against the South County
Bandits had them down the 1st set but they recovered and regrouped winning the
next two. However our next game against the Scarborough Titans was
disastrous, losing both sets. After the third game win against Aurora
Storm, Attack would still find themselves 3rd in their pool. This set up a
final day with a run of U16 teams fighting for top spot.
Sunday would
see Attack play a very strong defensive U16 Defensa team. Attack would
prevail 25/20 and 25/19. Next up was U16 DRVC, this team had beaten us
previously in the season during pool play and Attack knew it would be a battle.
Attack came out strong and won the 1st set 25/16, the 2nd set was point for
point but Attack pulled ahead to take it 25/22.
Then it
happened…the U16 DA Black were their next challenge. The girls had never
met in tournament play, of course they had practiced together but this was
serious, especially since U16 had won this tournament last year. It was
great volleyball, hit, block, and dig at its best! The 1st set was so
close but U17 pulled it off winning 26/24. The 2nd set was just as intense
but the U17 seemed to control the game winning 25/19. As a parent, it was
one of the hardest games to watch and cheer for…but we managed!
The gold medal
match would have Attack face the Waterloo Predators. We had both won and
lost to this team during season play and knew it would be tough. The girls put
forth a great battle but were unable to beat a strong home team, losing both
sets and finishing with a very respectable Silver.
Again U17
Black has shown they belong right up there at the top and should be very proud.
Many teams were happy this weekend to see Attack falter but not many teams have
the bond that this team possesses, which enables them to pick each other up and
continue on their quest.
Congratulations to our All-Stars - Dani Vortisch as outside hitter and setter
Sarah Gilbride. We are all so proud of you!
And thank-you
to Curtis and Krista for giving up yet another weekend to spend with our girls.
Special thanks for all the parents who helped out scorekeeping and doing
lines…well done! It is always a blast when this team is away together and
I look forward to more good times in Ottawa…and can we play “back of the line”
again…for Cris?
