The 16U Black team
travelled to Maumee, Ohio this weekend to play in the 16N Ohio Region Volleyball
Tournament as a prelude to the upcoming Ontario Provincials.
Parents and players alike, without hesitation, all agreed that it was definitely
worth the drive to Ohio. The calibre of ball that the girls were engaged in was
much higher, more intense and much more challenging than the volleyball we have
seen here in Ontario. The teams were bigger, quicker, harder hitting with more
powerful serves which made for some incredible games of volleyball for the girls
to play and the parents to watch.
Day 1 found the girls in a pretty tough pool as they made adjustments to the
U.S. style game and found their rhythm. The team won their first two matches and
found themselves in the last game of pool play facing team Atlantis. This match
could have gone either way but unforced errors saw the Attack girls drop this
match 24-26 and 21-25 to finish 2nd in their pool.
Power pooling had the girls in yet another tough grouping with the 2nd seed of
the tournament, Niagara Frontier, who were seeded 1st. Attack won their first
two matches and built momentum heading into the 3rd game against the higher
seeded team, Niagara Frontier. Not wanting to finish 2nd again the girls dug
down deep and showed true grit to come out victorious in power pool play
finishing 1st and thereby guaranteeing themselves one of 8 spots in the GOLD
bracket division.
With lots of spectators now watching this unknown Canadian team the girls
delivered. They won their quarter final game against the Pittsburgh Renaissance, moving them into the semi's to face Team Atlantis once again. This
match was deja vu with what seemed to be the same unforced errors but even more
bizarrely the same scores with Attack dropping the match 24-26 and 21-25. Team
Atlantis then went on to win the tournament Gold in the finals in two straight
sets.
For this Canadian team's first venture into U.S. territory to have lost only 2
matches over two days to the eventual Gold medal winner and to capture a Bronze
was a great accomplishment.
Well done Attack and we hope that you bring that same intensity to the
Provincials.
And a BIG thank you to Ehvan and Steven Parrott for driving down to support the
team on Saturday. It was great to have Ehvan back on the bench but we will
be happier to have her back on the court!
