During the late afternoon of March 27th 14U Black headed down the 401 for the Open Championship East in Ottawa. This would be our first tournament in about a month so everyone was anxious to see how such a long break would affect play.

We were seeded 4th so our first match was against the 12th seeded Rattlers. Although we won in straight sets the girls were definitely rusty and play wasn’t up to our usual standards. Our next match was immediately following against the 5th seeded Barrie Elites, and once again we came out very sluggish and only scored 12 points in the first set. We came back strong in the second set winning 25/20 but fell 6/15 in the tie breaker.

This put us second in our pool and it was time to regroup and refuel the system with some lunch.

During the break I think the hotel called with a late wake up call because everyone came back refreshed and ready to play. Our next match had us coming back to our regular form with two straight decisive wins but unfortunately it was against our sister 13U Black team who played a very good match.

This now put us against the 3rd seed Storm Twister, but the afternoon saw a different DA team on the court. Storm was having a good day coming into our match with four straight convincing wins, but this was short lived as it was clear from the first served what the result was going to be. The first set was over before anyone realized with a 25/13 win. The second set was much the same with Storm only scoring 16 points.

We now had North Bay to deal with in the semi finals. This was a great match which could have gone either way but unfortunately we fell in straight sets scoring 14 & 22 points. Although disappointed we knew we could have won the match so spirits were still high because we would be playing Barrie for the bronze medal. Barrie handled us relatively easily in the morning so everyone had something to prove to Barrie and more importantly themselves.

It didn’t take long to set the tone with strong passes, hits and serves. 30 minutes after we started Rob was hanging medals around the girl’s necks. We dominated both sets with wins against 15 & 17 points.

We didn’t win the tournament but everyone had fun and was satisfied with the overall play and eventual result. Almost everyone stayed over Saturday night so we could have a celebratory team dinner which capped off a great weekend.
