The 15U Black Girls
became the “Golden Girls” yesterday with their first place win at the Challenge
Cup in Brampton!
It was a struggle from
the start. Our girls took the first pool play match against DRVC 15 Blue 25-20
and 25-22. Impact 15U came to the court for the second match determined to win,
and win they did with scores of 22-25 and 23-25. When the dust settled, the 3
teams in the pool were all tied for matches won so points were counted and
Durham Attack ended up first in the pool by 3 points!
On to the crossover against Titans Nemesis. The first game went to the Titans
23-25. We took the second 25-16 and after an amazing serving run we came from
behind with a score of 3-11 to take the tie breaker 15-12 (way to go Nicole and
team!). Next up was Storm Thunder – always a fight to the finish. Once again the
first game went to Storm 12-25, the second to Attack 25-16 and the tie breaker
was ours with a score of 15-12.
The girls were getting tired after a couple of back to back three game matches
but they refueled with a quick snack and it was on to meet Maverick Ambush for
the gold medal match. The Mavericks had beaten us in the 16U McGregor Cup
earlier this season in Pembrooke and came to the floor looking pretty confident
they would repeat the win. Our girls took the first game 25-21. The second game
was a point by point battle and finished with a 23-25 win for the Mavericks. Our
girls dug deep and came up on top once again taking the third game 15-11.
Congratulations to the girls and the coaches on the first gold of the season and
to the parents for surviving all the good (and bad!) “heart stopper” plays made
during the day!
A final note from the coach …Kevin says that the girls served amazingly well all
day and played improved defense, when it mattered most. He also stated that with
more consistent passing, this team will be hard to beat. They continue to
develop and the coaching staff is confident that the team is heading in the
right direction!
