It was a slow start to the day for the Black Attack at UTSC on the weekend. In
the opening match against the Kitchener Predators the team showed some good
moments, however some close calls and missed opportunities led the team to
defeat 26 – 24 and 25 – 21.
The Aurora Storm were the next opponents, and the team managed a big comeback in
the first set to win 25 – 23. In the second set Black got into a groove and won
25 – 15, giving the team a second place finish in. pool play.
In the medal round the first match was against Barrie. The first set was close
with the Black team coming out on top 25 – 23. The second set again saw some
serious hitting and confident play, with Black winning that one 25 – 15, which
led to a quarter-final match against the top-ranked Pakmen.
Against a very big and powerful Pakmen team, the boys showed their huge
potential winning the first set 25 – 19. Unfortunately they fell out of rhythm a
little bit in the second set and lost that one 19 – 25. The third set was a
tough one, with Pakmen prevailing 15 – 10, sending the team to a consolation
match. (The Pakmen went on to the gold medal final and lost a close match in
three sets to take the silver.)
In the final match of the day the boys played a bit too low-key and ended up
falling in 3 sets to Toronto West, to finish the tournament in a tie for 7th
place.
This was another good learning experience, with different line-ups in every set
and overall great potential demonstrated. As the team continues to develop and
grow there will no doubt be even greater success in the future!
