Our first match was against Peterborough and after a close first set 26-24 we
easily won the second set only giving up 15 points. Next was DRVC Blue and
once again we won two straight giving up 14 & 25 points respectively. We
finished first in our pool with a 4 & 0 record and now had a couple of hour wait
to see who we would be playing.
Our crossover opponent ended up being DRVC which both teams were looking forward
to. We were definitely confident being undefeated on the day, but we came
out a little flat footed and lost the first set only scoring 14 points.
The second set saw us play a lot better building up an early 5 point lead, but
we again came up sort scoring just 20 points. We definitely didn't play
our best but full marks go out to DRVC who simply played better than we did.
This was definitely disappointing, but there will definitely be rematches
throughout the year so we will learn from this and produce a different outcome
next time.
We had a second birthday to celebrate so when Angie lit the candles on Autumn's
cake everyone seemed to recover, and sprits were back up where they were prior
to our last match.
After what seemed like an eternity we played our final match against the Titans.
The first set was a nail biter going to 27 points, but we dominated the second
set only giving up 15 points which put us in 5th place for the day.
Although we would have certainly liked to win the tournament we did finish with
a respectable 6 & 2 record on the day. This brings our record to an envious 16 &
2 for the year in 14U medal tournaments.
The parents learned some new things on this trip as well. If Dave and Rob
S jump together on a bed, the bed will break - hmmm. They have a slightly
different recollection but it's probably best if we don't probe too deep into
this one. We also found out if its -25 degrees and you back your car into
another one that has a cheap plastic bumper the bumper will end up in pieces -
hmmm. We now know that northern police forces like to set up speed traps
late on Fridays in the middle of snow storms hoping to catch unsuspecting
fathers traveling to volleyball tournaments - hmmm. Last but not least we
should not let peer pressure change our beliefs. If you own a pink camera,
continue to hold it high no matter what all the other fathers say * be proud of
your favourite color - hmmm.
We didn't win the tournament, but our record was respectable and everyone had a
great time. There were lots of laughs and a few lessons learned on the
court as well. I 'm sure everyone is looking forward to our next road trip and
hoping it doesn't involve highway 11 NORTH.
