The 16U Black Team
traveled to Hamilton this past weekend to compete in the 17U Provincial Cup. The
first round of pooling for the day saw Attack pitted against three teams who had
a very difficult time against the more imposing Attack girls. The 16U Blacks
defeated each of their opponents in two straight sets dominating play throughout
each match.
Attack vs. Stouffville - 25-12, 25-11
Attack vs. Act Elites - 25-8, 25-11
Attack vs. Georgian Cubs - 25-9, 25-7
In the afternoon, after re-pooling, Attack would face some tougher competition
when they took to the court and squared off against the host team, a scrappy and
talented 17U MAC team. The first set caught Attack off guard and sitting
back on their heels, causing them to fall behind in points. After a
strategic time out by "NEW" coach Chris Williamson (inside joke) the girls took
the floor and claimed the first set 25-22. More alert and awake the girls
took the second set 25-15.
Next up would be the Storm
Vortex who fell prey to Attack in two straight sets 25-15 and 25-15.
The final and most anticipated match of the day would have Attack playing the
17U Scarborough Titan Team who, without a doubt, were hoping to avenge the loss
they suffered from this younger team at last year's 16U Provincial Championship
when they lost to Attack in the semi's. Attack, with precision and ease,
swiftly took the first set 25-12. Confident from the commanding win in the
first set, a much less intense Attack team took the court and that lack of
intensity would cost them. Unforced errors and a lack of focus on the
court saw the girls fall in the second set 25-27. The third and final set
was the ultimate battle ground for this showdown. The Titan's had
momentum, having taken the second set, and Attack continued to make some
unforced errors and found themselves behind at the switch 8-5. After a
strategic time-out Attack battled back with strength and determination to take
the final set 15-13.
Lessons learned......................... the intensity, focus, drive and
determination to win should never change no matter who is on the other side of
the net. Stay focused and play each game like it is the championship
match. Give everything you have and play your game to the best of your
ability, from start to finish, and you will always come out a winner no matter
what the outcome.
Well done 16U's! You have now earned a well deserved Christmas Break to
rest and heal. We will no doubt see a more intense and focused team in the
coming New Year.
Have a Healthy, Happy Holiday Season.
