The 16U Black team travelled to Bowmanville this past weekend to play in the 16U
Provincial Cup and dominated play throughout the day not dropping a single set.
This year's team consists of 8 returning players, 2 new players and 2 new
coaches. Parents, spectators and opponents saw a bigger, stronger, faster
Durham Attack Team take the court and were treated to some impeccable displays
of team play and individual talent throughout the day.
Offensively the girls were on fire as they crushed ball after ball perfecting
and executing plays that they have been practicing since September. Candice,
Erin and Taylor wowed the crowd with their acrobatics and power out of left
side. Jaz, Alanna and Rachel owned the middle using power and finesse to
score points. The opposition were forced to face the 1 -2 -3 punch of our
setters from right side with Emily, Evhan and Lily providing more than the
opposition could handle. I t looks like some surprises are in store this year
for the competition.
Defensively the team was unbelievable as the motto of "no ball hits the floor"
was the theme for the day and the girls definitely did not disappoint and from
what a little birdie told me one player in particular (Jodi Mitchell) even made
some moola($) in dimes for 'passing dimes' all day long. Also, 'hitting
the wall' took on a whole new meaning today as opponents were met with a HUGE
BLACK WALL (Attack Black that is) and the resounding noise of "ROOF" was echoed
repeatedly throughout the gym. Serving was like having a machine at the
back line. All the girls served well but recognition must be given to Candice
Ottey and Emily Betteridge who both put on a serving clinic at various times
throughout the tournament. The energizer bunny had nothing on them this day.
Special thanks to Darryl for stepping in for Chris and holding the fort and to
Dave for taking stats and helping out. This is a great start to what we
believe is going to be yet another great season.
