Friday April 18th kicked off the 14U provincial championships at RIM Park in Waterloo. As the Durham Attack Red girls went into their first game they were ready to play and wanting to win. The girls came out strong against the Scarborough Falcons, winning the first set 25-16.  The next set was not as strong as the first and the girls lost 16-25, leading to a third set. I n the third set the girls fought hard, but came up short, losing the set 8-15. Although the victory was not in the favour of the Attack team, the girls did not give up and were determined to win the next game.

The NBYVC “Flurry” team narrowly took the win in the first set, 21-25.  But again in the second game Attack came back to take the Flurry team to a third set.  Once again, closely defeating the Attack girls Flurry won the last set 10-15.

Despite the second loss, the girls still had the ambition to win, and once again they went into the next game strong, this time up against the Maverick Gold diggers.  It was close in the first set, point for point, but it wasn’t close enough for the Attack girls, and once again they just barely lost to the Mavs 20-25.  Losing a bit of momentum in the second game, the girls did not get as close this time, and lost the second set 18-25.  The girls retreated to the hotel where they laughed, joked and had a great time, and did not worry themselves about the games that had passed.

The second day was a completely different story for the Red team.  Their first game brought them up against Riverside; the girls went in strong playing as one on the court.  They got a lead, and never looked back.  The girls took this set 25-11.  As the excitement aroused the girls could hardly wait to get on the court for the second set.  Once again the girls got the lead and never gave it up, this game being closer than the last the girls still won 25-19.

Their second match was against Forest City.  The attitudes were great and the teamwork was still amazing, and Attack took both sets 20-15.

With one game left for the day, the girls went in with the same intensity against the Toronto Aces.  Both the sets were very close the first one being 25-21 and the second 25-20, both in favour of Attack!  After this exciting day the girls went for a team dinner at Moose Winooski’s, where the girls got to see two of their coaches get a pie in the face!

The next morning it was make it or break it for the 14U Red girls.  The first match was up against Flurry, the loss to the same team on Friday had the girls coming back wanting to win more than in any of the other games that weekend.  The girls won both of the sets 25-20, and were very excited.  This game had not only saved the girls from being done in the tournament, but it also guaranteed the girls a medal match.

But it came at a price of a 5-hour break.  In the second match of the day the girls were matched up with Oakville Thunder, the girls played great, but the long break definitely did not work in the girls favour, as they lost both sets 20-25.  The girls would not be playing for gold, but they still had a chance to medal.  Their next match followed right after, and had the girls up against a very tough Selects ’94 team.  The girls were close in the first set, and victory just skimmed by, as they lost 21-25.  The second set however was in favour of Attack, and the girls took this set 25-20.  In the third set the girls were point for point, and falling behind the Selects, but they came back and tied them at 13-13.  At this point it was our serve and we did not give them a chance at coming back.  The third set was 15-13 for Attack.  This gave the girls a Bronze medal in Division 1, Tier 3!!!

The teamwork and effort was amazing all weekend.  Congratulations girls!  We would also like to say thank you to Heather Dean and Kathy Cormier for score keeping, and Larry Cudlip for doing lines, and of course to our coaches Darryl, John and Linda.  Good luck at National’s ladies!
