The Durham Attack 16U Black finished the 17U Provincials with a 4-2 record, good
enough for 9th Place at the 17U Provincials hosted by the Niagara Rapids.
The round robin
began with a battle with the number 1 seeded Aurora Storm. What is unfortunately
becoming tradition, the girls had a slow start and weren’t ever really in any
control of the first game. Game 2 the Attack woke up and gave the Storm all they
could handle losing a close set 26-28. Matches two and three saw the real
Durham Attack team step up and defeat the Forest City 16U and the Halton
Hurricanes both in straight sets.
In the cross-over
we were up against a determined South County Bandits who played a very
consistent match to defeat our girls 2-1. The difference in the match was
we had to play catch up in all three games after spotting the Bandits 4-0 leads
in each set. The Positive is we came back in each set only to lose 14-16
in the deciding game.
On day two the
girls were able to defeat Georgian Bay Vista in an exciting 3 set match, which
put them up against rival DRVC. The theme of the tournament was comebacks
and there was no difference in the final match of the day. After being
down 23-18 in game one the girls were able to come back to tie the game at 23.
Although DRVC were able to hold on to win 25-23, the girls would use the
momentum to dominate in game two, defeating DRVC 25-16. Game three saw a
great comeback from 16U black team. Down 10-6, the girls were determined not to
lose to their cross-town rivals from Durham. I t was exciting to see the girls
play with such passion as they literally dug and passed their way to a great 3
set victory. Leading the Dig Parade was Chelsea Hazlewood who’s great play
in the back started a number of kills. Sarah Gillbride did a great job
keeping the defense guessing as she spread the offence around nicely.
Molly Shannon who had to fill in the middle position really improved from day
one to become a big factor in the middle. Dani Vortisch and Amy McGrath
really carried the offence all weekend with timely and huge kills. They
were both equally reliable on defense as well. Taylor Warman was great again
this weekend stepping in to play different roles for the Attack and doing a
remarkable job. Taylor Kuchma had a number of huge and timely blocks as
well as played smart offensively. Kayla Donahue was great Saturday putting
up her best offensive performance of the year. She carried that into
Sunday to have some timely kills.
With the 16U
Provincials a week away, we hope to be 100% and welcome back Tara from an
illness that has kept her out of action for three weeks. As well a healthy
Victoria Young who tweaked an old knee injury will only add to the fire power.
One week of hard work at practice and the girls will be ready to compete for
their Season Goal.
