The Durham Attack 16U Black team entered the Niagara Rapids Invitational
tournament this past weekend in an effort to prepare for the upcoming
Provincials.
The girls were placed in a very tough pool with Forest City 17U and Georgetown
Impact. Forest City 17U would be the first challenge for the Attack as
they defeated our girls 2-0. We were able to play tough with the big team from
London but couldn’t put together enough runs to compete in the end.
Our next match was against a new rival for the Attack, the Georgetown Rapids.
We were able to win two very close games 28-26, and 25-23. The win would
put us in the Semi Final against the 16U Forest City Team. Game one would
be a very tough game as FC would play very strong defensively giving the Attack
all they could handle. However the Attack girls would keep pounding the ball and
eventually win game one 25-22. Game two saw the Durham Attack 16U girls
play their most dominating game of the season. Every aspect of their game
was sharp as they were able to defeat 16U Forest City 25-9 to win the match and
advance to the Final.
In the Final, we
were able to push the 17U FC to three games, and settle for a silver medal.
The goal for the team was to prepare for the Provincials coming up the next two
weekends. The girls were able to achieve this goal despite being shorthanded as
we only had 8 players for the day. Sarah Gilbride did a great job setting up the
offence while nursing a quad injury. She was also just as good on the defensive
end. Kayla Donahue, Amy McGrath, Victoria Young, and Dani Vortisch all had
to play out of position to fill the hole in the middle. The girls did a
great job defending the net against their much taller opponents. Taylor
Kuchma did a great job in the middle as well as served great all day.
Taylor Warman was also on double duty for the Attack as she did a great job
playing both left side and right side. Chelsea Hazlewood was her usual self
playing great in the back row.
The coaching staff is confident that the girls will be ready for the
Provincials. They have improved every part of their game and will continue to
work until their season goal is complete!
