The Durham Attack 16U girls played some of their greatest volleyball this
weekend against very tough 17U competition at Austin CSS in Whitby.
Up first in pool
play was MAC, the girls capitalized on a number of MAC mistakes to take the
first set 25-15. In game two the girls didn’t have the same jump as they
typically can. Still they competed in a very exciting 28-30 loss in game
2. Game 3 MAC took an early lead that they held on to win game 3 and the
match 15-10. With our 17U Black team away in Vegas, our next opponent was
the number 1 ranked Storm Typhoon. This match was the toughest our girls
have played all season. In a very fast paced match the Attack showed that
they can compete with the best at the 17U level. Game 1 saw the girls
slowly build confidence against their very strong opponent. A couple of
runs showed us that we can compete, Final score 18-25. Even though we
played them tough you could sense that wasn’t good enough for our determined 16U
girls. The next two games of volleyball would see our girls play their
best volleyball this season. As we started to pass the ball with
tremendous accuracy, our execution of each attack grew. However the
difference maker to give us the 25-23 victory was our tremendous defensive play.
We seemed to block or dig everything they hit at us. Game three was just
as exciting as we took the number 1 team right to the limit losing 14-16.
It was a nice moment as a coach watching these girls perform at a very high
level, well done ladies.
After 6 games of tough volleyball it didn’t get any easier for 16U Black as we
would up against a very big team the KW Predators. Game 1 was yet another
close one as the girls dropped a 23-25 decision to the Predators. Game 2
it was clear that the girls ran out of gas, and were spent on emotion after 7
very tough sets. The Predators easily defeated us in game 2 25-10.
The final 2 matches of the day were against familiar opponents. First up
was MAC who we played earlier in the day, and lost a close 3 set match.
With nothing but pride and seeding to play for, the girls showed that they still
had something to prove. Despite playing some of our greatest volleyball of
the season, the girls were left without winning a single match on the day.
That didn’t sit well with these very competitive athletes and they took control
early and often passing the lights out and cruising to an easy 2 set victory
25-21. To end the day we defeated our 16U rivals the Titans 25-21, 29-27.
Overall it was another good day of volleyball for the Durham Attack 16U girls.
As coaches we are confident that we will be up to the challenge to compete in
the Provincials in April.
