The
Durham Attack 14U Black Girls volleyball team travelled to Moncton, New
Brunswick to compete in the 2007 Volleyball Canada Nationals. The tournament
commenced on May 11th through until the 13th at the Moncton Coliseum.
The team competed in Tier 1 and had a great start to their weekend defeating the
Bleu et Or (Moncton) 25-8 25-5, West Prince Islanders 25-7 25-9 and the LaSalle
Horions 25-12 25-16. Strong serving, great blocking and defence enabled 14U
Black to remain undefeated throughout pool play. Saturday the team raised the
bar up even further and played with such intensity against their rivals DRVC
14U. DRVC 14U was just as motivated as the 14U Black, but spectacular serving,
strong blocking, digging every ball, left no room for the defending provincial
champs to become victorious. 14U Black defeated DRVC 25-23 22-25 15-13.
14U Black continued with their strong playing skills to the make it to the medal
matches against some very disciplined and talented Quebec teams. The final Gold
Medal match against the St. Jerome Dragons was the most challenging match for
the 14U Black. The Dragons did not want to be defeated. 14U Black were
continually executing perfect plays, chasing down balls, displaying exceptional
passing and very strong defence enabling the 14U Black to win the match. With a
score of 21-25 26-24 and 15-5 the St. Jerome Dragons remained very competitive
and strong to the last point.
Coaches Kevin Hellyer, Lisa Elliot and Courtney Burnett are very proud of their
players and commended them on such a great accomplishment. The coaches are
already looking forward to the challenges of next season. Their players are:
Emily Betteridge, Jasmine White, Ehvan Parrott, Kelsey O’Hara, Emily Nicholishen,
Ashleigh Andzel, Elise Hazelton, Jody Mitchell, Alanna Blenkam, Jenny
Richardson, Candice Ottey and Sara Horne.
