Home > Durham Attack | 15U Boys Win Bronze at 16U Bugarski Cup
|
With only two week until Provincials the 15U Boys entered a 16U
competition for the first time this season, the tier 3 Bugarski Cup
and came home with a medal. The competition was a bit stronger
than expected but a slow start in the round robin did not phase this
group of focused competitors.

The first match of the medal round went our way, 25-17, 25-16 with
Cameron Wynn taking control in power and scoring repeated points by
picking holes in the Goderich Trail Blazers defense. Middle man
Nathan Minard provided the blocks all the way across the net, keeping
the opposition from mounting any serious attack.
The quarter final match against Sudbury’s Les Diables saw some shifts
in assignments as Tom Alayon made his second appearance of the season
in the starting Power position. Tom did not disappoint with his huge
jumps and deceptively strong hitting with pinpoint accuracy.
Pete Koropatwa came in to his Right Side spot swinging hard in attack
and forcing the Sudbury hitters to think again before trying to get
anything over the net on his side of the court. Provided with
dime passes by Tim Flynn in Libero, Setter Scott Cockburn was able to
set up the sweet balls in the middle for Pierre Auger to go over the
top with. A strong win in three close sets, 25-20, 22-25, 15-8
had the Durham squad looking forward to the Semi final.
The first set of the Semi-final against Pegasus caught Attack off
guard, 11-25. They did not go down without a fight in the second
set though, coming from behind to push the older boys from Kingston to
extra points 24-26.
The Bronze medal match was time for revenge against Toronto West who
had defeated our 15U boys in the opening match of the day in round
robin play. The pace was set by ‘Mr. Hustle’ Kieran Sadler, in a
come from behind 25-22 first set win, that saw Kieran covering the
court on almost every rally – he was on fire. A nail biter in
set two, 25-27, brought the whole tournament down to a final 15 points
to decide who gets to go home with the hardware. Durham made a
fast start and switched sides with confidence, leading 8-1.
There was a let down as T-West refused to give up and fought back for
6 consecutive points. Durham regained their composure as points
were exchanged on both sides, the pivotal moment came with a crushing
back court attack from Sebastien Keegan that hit the court at the
opponents attack line. The final point in the 15-12 win came
with authority as Bryan Wysocki put up an ace jump serve that let the
opponents know that the Durham Attack 15U boys are ready and waiting
for Provincials in two weeks time.
