Durham
Attack G14U Red accepted an invitation to play for a great cause in Burlington
on March 31st. The 1st annual ‘Diggin for the Cure’ tournament was hosted
by the Halton Women’s Volleyball League. All proceeds went to support
Breast Cancer prevention and research.
It was a
wonderful day. The team felt good about supporting such a worthy cause.
Competition was strong (mainly tier 1 and 2 teams), and the tournament was well
organized. G14U Red coaches recently introduced some new offensive and defensive
team strategies and this tournament provided a perfect opportunity to practice.
The first match
pitted Attack Red against the Scarborough Titans. Attack’s learning curve
was evident as they put their new positions and strategies into play. It
was interesting to watch the team gain confidence and cohesiveness as the games
progressed. The Titans were very strong (they eventually won gold), and
the match fell 20-25, 19-25 and 15-12. However, Red won the third game and
demonstrated great teamwork and focus.
Attack easily
took the second match against the Aurora Storm and went on to face DRVC Blue for
the cross-over. During this match, the team was more comfortable with
their strategy, and kept control of the court. It was terrific to see G14U
Red staying on the offensive. DRVC put forth a solid effort, but Attack
kept up the heat to take the match 25-15 and 25-22.
In the play-offs
Attack Red had another shot at the Titans. The games were hard fought, but
the Titans prevailed (23-25 and 15-25). Attack Red played well, however
had some trouble with serving and line errors.
The final match
of the day was for the Bronze position. The Niagara Rapids came on strong
in the first game, taking an early lead. Attack played hard to close the
gap by mid-game. The Rapids ultimately surged ahead to win 20-25. In
the second game, Attack refused to relinquish the lead. They maintained
comfortable control throughout, resulting in a win of 25-17. The tie
breaker was an excellent game. Both sides played great volleyball.
Rallies were exciting, teamwork was tight, and the plays were amazing. The
game was neck-in-neck, with Attack forging ahead to win 15-11.
The coaches did a
great job of supporting and guiding the team through their new strategies.
The entire team saw a lot of court time, and everyone enjoyed the day.
A big thank you
to our wonderful coaches for the excellent work they do! Congratulations
to Attack U14 Red on bringing home bronze!
