What can we say…the girls on the 13U White team keep surprising
everyone, including themselves, I think!!
Fresh off their third place performance at the 13U Bugarski Cup in
Kingston the week before, our Girls 13U White team headed off to
Newmarket (a little closer this time…sorry girls, no overnight stay
this weekend!) to join their 13U Black clubmates at the Zone C 14U
Bugarski Cup. We were all hoping for a good showing from our girls,
but we had no idea the treat that they had in store for us that day!
Our first match saw us up against the Aurora Storm Cyclone.
Having faced another Storm team the weekend before, we knew we were up
for a challenging match, and we weren’t disappointed. The match
went to three sets, and we lost this nail biter in the third set.
It was a great start to the day, since our girls proved that they
could play at this level!
The next match pitted us against the Northern Chill. This was
another close one, also going to three sets, although this time we
came out on top 15-12 in the final set to take our first match of the
day. Things were looking up, and the girls were thrilled with
their success (I think I saw a little pride in the faces of the
parents…maybe just a little???!!!)
This placed us second in our pool, so off to playoffs we went.
We first faced the Etobicoke Wildcats, and our girls played two
decisive sets 25-17, 25-18 to win their first match of the playoffs.
With some apprehension, we headed into the next match against the
Toronto Pink Lightning, a team that had beaten us in Brighton for the
Bronze medal. This time, however, the Pink Lightning faced a
not-quite-so-tired team, and our girls managed a straight sets win
against their rivals, 26-24, 25-21.
It was then that we realized that we had accomplished something
perhaps none of us had imagined at the start of the day…we were in the
semi-finals! This match had us up against a 14U team, the Storm
Thunder squad from Aurora. Although our girls played valiantly,
our team fell to the Aurora team in two straight sets. The girls
were a little disappointed, but then in typical 13U White fashion,
their chins came up, they squared their shoulders, and got ready for
the Bronze medal match.
Who should we face in that match, but our 13U Black clubmates!
Again, the girls played with grit and determination, and never gave
up. Unfortunately for us, 13U Black proved a little too much for
us that day, and they went on to take the Bronze medal. Still,
it meant that we had finished fourth at a 14U tournament, and for a
team that could rightly play in the now-defunct 12U division, we were
all, parents, team members and coach, thrilled at the success of our
team at this tournament!
Things are definitely looking up for the 13U division for the
provincials, and we are all hoping for a three-medal showing at the
Provincials this year in 13U!
Go Durham Attack!
