Durham
Attack Girls U14 Red brought home Bronze medals from the Hawkins Cup on January
20. The tier 2 tournament played out at Mayfield S.S. in Brampton.
Our experience
at the Hawkins Cup is perhaps best described as “multilayered”. There were
moments of brilliant play, team bonding, a severe allergic reaction, wild
cheering, a couple ill team members, a few too many errors, tears and laughter.
As is typical of tournaments, it was certainly never dull!
Pool play
began with a 25-12, 27-25 victory against the Breakers. The next match pitted
U14 Red against the Waterdown Raiders. Both games started out close, with
Attack committing more unforced errors than usual. At the midpoint of each
game, the team demonstrated determination and cohesion to pull ahead and win
25-18 and 25-14.
Play offs
commenced after an extended, enjoyable lunch break. The team returned to the
court to face Forest City Blue. The girls had
difficulty regaining focus and lost the first game 14-25. After some “intense”
coaching, the team roared back to win the match 25-15, 15-3. (Kudos coaches!)
The next play off
match vs. the Toronto Toros was pivotal in
determining whether U14 Red would be in contention for gold, or fighting for
bronze. The team was disappointed to fall to the Toros in the tie-breaker 9-15.
Play moved
directly to the bronze medal match. For the second time that day, U14 Red faced
the Waterdown Raiders. The girls played with heart and demonstrated great
teamwork to defeat the Raiders 25-19 and 25-14.
It was great to
finish in the medals. Durham Attack U14 Red is
looking forward to future tournaments and more determined than ever to add some
gold to their collection. Congratulations girls!
