Our volleyball
season does not end after the May madness at Nationals! Many of our players
take to the beach in summer months, playing in competitive Beach Volleyball tournaments held on
most weekends across
Ontario. Our players have had
great success in past beach seasons, winning multiple Ontario and National
championships. Although
volleyball is one of the five most popular sports in the world (source: FiVB), Beach Volleyball (or
Beach as it is known) is
a recent addition that is quickly growing in profile.
Introduced at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Canada had a fantastic start, with
the team of John Child and Mark Heese winning the first beach bronze medal.
Other notable Canadian finishes include Guylaine Dumont and Annie Martin placing
5th in Athens in 2004, along side Child & Heese on the mens side.
Both of these
beach teams have had an influence on Durham Attack players, with John Child
teaching our Durham Attack U12 girls, and our U14 girls teams
meeting Guylaine Dumont at the Festival Interprovincial in Joliette in 2005. |
