It was two days of many ups and downs for the Girls 14U Black team at the Tier 1 Ontario Championship held April 1 and 2 at U of T Scarborough.

Durham Attack Girls 14U Black - 2006 Ontario Silver Medalists

The girls dominated pool play by defeating the National Capitals 25-21, 25-15, Kingston Pegasus Black 25-17, 25-11 and Georgetown Impact Black 25-10, 25-16.

The crossover match was easily within their grasp, as they defeated the Toronto Toros 25-5, 25-15.  The girls played sharp, focused ball, and with amazing teamwork. Great hits! Great blocks!

On Sunday, the first match was against the South County Bandits Teal, and our team gave an extraordinary performance with their ability to overcome a first game loss of 11-25. Our girls had to ‘dig deep’ to shake off a loss of confidence, and continued fighting to find the strength and will to be their best.  And true to Durham Attack Black form, they fought their way back to beat the Bandits 27-25, then winning the match with a 15-11 victory. It was inspiring to watch (as well as very stressful for the parents and coaches!).

The girls then went on to defeat the Scarborough Titans in 3 games (22-25, 25-12, 15-11). Sweet revenge!

The final match for the gold medal was with the Niagara Rapids Black.  This team certainly challenged our girls, but they defeated them on the first game 25-22.  The second game was lost 17-25 through a series of unlucky breaks and close calls, and the third game was lost in a heart stopping and heart breaking 13-15 final score.

Although exhausted, the girls never stopped fighting and it was clear that the lesson had been learned from the game against the Bandits: never give up.  Our girls never did.  We are all extremely proud of them and look forward to our tournaments in Joliette, the 15U Provincials Tier 2, and the Nationals in Moncton.

Congratulations to Chelsea Hazlewood for winning the Award of Excellence.  As our libero, Chelsea’s consistency of performance is something we may take for granted at times, but it is never underrated. Way to go Chel!
