Running a Tryout
By: Coach Tony
I coach the same age group and will be having try-outs in about a month. The best thing to do is have drills that keep the kids moving w/ as few kids standing around as possible. I do not know what kind of facilities you have but breaking them ip into groups to play 3 v 3 is great. This way everybody is moving and you get to see some intangibles like: moving w/o ball, seeing floor, rebounding, "D" away from ball, etc. I do drills that try and measure how athletic the kids are, because if they are good athletes I can teach them the game. Also, if you must have kids in line take the opportunity to check out their line behavior. Are they trouble makers? Are they paying attention? Here is a sample of what I would do in a try-out say from 7 - 8:30 (my try-out times) 6:55 - 7:10 Sign in, get names on back of shirts if not already on, and shoot around (great to see interaction w/ other kids) 7:10 - 7:25 Full Court Layups - Right side then left - Use this to see cordination, agility, skill, etc. (I use a rebounder and an outlet) 7:25 - 7:40 1 v 1 Defensive Slides - Groups of two using the three lanes of the court. Offensive player dribbles right to "out of bounds" then crosses over to left and dribbles to "out of bounds". Defender slides with him, dropping in and cutting him off, with his hands behind his back. 7:40 - 7:50 Break into groups and run Lines, suicides, whatever. Then give a Drink break. 7:50 - 8:10 Broken into groups play as many seperate games of 3 v 3 as possible. 8:10 - 8:30 Full Court scrimmage or some variation that you may prefer. Is not the best use of space and time but it must be done. Sorry so lengthy but I wanted to give at least some detail. BTW where is your team from ??
