Hints & Tips
By: Coach Rowe
Kevin, I agree somewhat with coach marty in that having 2nd graders taste a little success in their skills keeps them in the game and keeps them trying to be better. Of paramount importance is the element of fun at this age. To teach juniors skills, teach fun drills! is what I say. For passing simple games like bull in the ring and dog and the bone are fun defensive and offensive style drills which give mini ballers a sense of achievement. For dribbling games like red rover (bullrush), dribble knock-out, stuck in the mud and line tiggy all using a ball are excellent drills which give players a sense of achievement when they dribble and they improve skills while having fun. For passing four consecutive passes to score and 'touchdown' are good passing games which teach passing skills and team work because players are not permitted to pass to the last player who passed to them. If you are not familiar with these drills just ask I will write them for you in another session. For defensive style games, again dog and the bone, and knee taps are fun drills. Finally for shooting simplified games of knock-out (ie elimination) and '21' are good. As is four shots and rotate.
