Use the Tee

Every year I can always count on the a consensus
OHHHHHH NOOO! from the kids when batting practice first comes up.
It erupts the moment the guys see me break out the batting
tee. There is simply no better tool, in my mind, for
teaching/ingraining good technique at the plate.

Basic use is simple, but it is important to ensure the tee
is positioned forward of the batter's hips, not directly on
top of home plate, even with the batter's centerline. The
coach now can really evaluate a swing and tweak away-the
batter doesn't have to worry about where the next pitch is
going or anything except concentrating on your instruction.
I'll generally have at least three tees on hand so we can run
the kids through without taking half the night.

One interesting drill that I learned from a video by a Stanford
softball coach includes using a slightly deflated basketball
on the tee. You want just enough air out that when pushed in
the ball will "slowly" return to round. Hitting this ball forces
the batter to focus on really driving all the way through the
swing, ohterwise the ball doesn't go anywhere. Set a target
line appropriate to your kids age, but make sure they have to
follow through strong to get to the target.
