Why Little League?

By: Ron Bing

Our league is also independent and I like it that way. Why shouldn't 11 and 12 year olds be allowed to lead off? Our bases are 70' and the pitching mound is 50'6". I believe Little League distances are much less. We play by American League rules, although there are some exceptions. The pitchers are not allowed to throw too many innings per week, and the umpires are a little lienient on the balk calls, etc. I wouldn't want to see 9 and 10 year olds leading off, but I think it is crazy to make 11 and 12 year olds hold the bag until the ball reaches the batter. If for no other reason than the leading off issue, I prefer independent ball to Little League.
