I coach 7 & 8 year olds so my tack is slightly different than what you would teach older kids. This is how I handle it. I generally play my kids deep. For two reasons. 1: It is easier for them to run up on a ball than it is for them to run backwards and field a ball. 2: At this age you have some kids that are scared of the ball. So what I ask them to do is let the ball hit in front of them. Field the ball. The main goal is never let the ball get behind them.. One drill I use is to take a tennis ball. Have the kids line up next to me then run pass plays like you do in football. They run about 10 yards out then turn and go left or right. I then toss the tennis ball to them. They have fun with this because at this age it is very challenging. After a while they build their confidence.
