Side Arm

By: Coach Pond

A good drill shown to me at a coaches clinic by Matt Whiteside of the Texas Rangers is to cut a piece of cloth approximately 1 inch by 3 feet. With the palm facing up, loop the cloth around the middle finger of the throwing hand and make a fist. Have another player stand about 6-7 feet in front of the player with the cloth, and have them extend a glove about 2 1/2 feet above the ground. Now have the player with the strip of cloth, using a throwing motion, try to `whip' the top of the other players glove. They will find that using a sidearm motion this will be very difficult, but using more of an over the top motion it will be quite easy. This is also a good drill to teach following though. Good Luck!
