Selecting Coaches

By: Jeff T.

We have 4 divisions in our league: 7/8 (coach pitch); 9/10; 11/12; 13-15. For our 7/8 the coach goes with whatever help he can get (players are assigned teams through a blind draw, with players retained from previous year).

For our 9/10 and 13-15, there is a draft by reverse order of finish from the previous year. The head coach AND asst (1) son costs a 1st and 2nd round pick (only in the 1st year they enter the league). We limit it to ONE "named" assistant coach and the person must be "declared" prior to tryouts. The named assistant is listed as the assistant as long as the player is on that team (unless the head coach moves on and the assistant takes over, then HE will get to choose an assistant.)

For our 11/12 (Little League), the one named assistant's son costs 5000 points in our draft (head coach's son only at 500). This means you better be sure that if you are getting an assistant just for the son's playing ability, that he'd better be worth it (usually, though, this comes as at "bargain"). Per L.L. regs, the players' points stay with him from year-to-year. JT.
