Dragging Pivot Toe

By: Walter Kiriaka

I would think that dragging the pivot toe would be a quick fix for throwing a changeup at playoff time.....
But, it's not good for a Pitchers Mechanics!

I've had a few kids who dragged the foot to throw a change and quickly got them out of it, resulting in a better fast ball and teaching them how to throw a change with a fastball arm motion, but working with the grip to decrease speed in the pitch.. Works pretty good.

My thoughts on the pivot foot is that it's more of a lift off the rubber on the follow through rather than a push and drag.

I will use a chair in some practices in the bull pen and get the pitcher to put his pivot foot on it and get him to simulate (finishing) the follow through.

Velocity comes from the legs and trunk and the changeup will come from the grip, stiffening of the wrist and practice.

I would very much disdain pitchers from dragging their pivot foot as their mechanics will have to change as they get older and I believe it will put too much of a strain on the backside and shoulder causing injury.

This is only meant to be another viewpoint and I'd like to hear others.
