AAU v LL {Rec} No Difference @ Allstar Time
By: Walter Kiriaka
Gentlemen, What am I missing here? In my experience that a LL Team of 12 & under will compete very favorably at Allstar time against a Travel Team. In fact LL or Rec is a very good Training program for a lot of future High School Stars. It's at the older ages LL was failing, but now with the Juniors at 2 Year age groupings, a lot of the LL's will or should retain there base of kids. At 10 yrs of age if a player is blowing the ball by everybody, it doesn't mean that at 14 he will even be pitching. As far as parents not wanting their kid to face an above average player is ludicrous, my players that I coach loved to play against 'Luca' the pitcher who could blow it by everybody at 12 yrs of age. (Well not every player but getting on base against this Pitcher sure gave a good experience to the kids and the team.) By the end of the Season my Team was getting to Luca, quite succesfully. A League whether it's LL, Rec or a Comp. League has to not only teach Values to the Players, but unfortunately to the Parents and we can have bad apples on both sides. By the way a Travel team in my Area is trying to develope a League, a Training League based on the fact this will be a training League. What will they accomplish? A feeder system for their Comp Teams. In fact this would be a LL. What's the difference between a Rec League and a Comp League? Just a name, most Leagues have a 'A' League and a 'B' Legaue where the skilled players are separated. Comp Leagues, don't have to take a kid they don't like or maybe they don't like a parent and won't take the kid because of it and where does this child go to play baseball? To a rec League where they have rules and fair play to take every child. Build the foundation first, worry about superstardom Later.
