Position Specialization
By: Jeff T
I would work a player like this into the O.F., while continuing work at the other positions. I'm a big believer in exposing a kid to a variety of positions, as it will help (IMHO) to learn the game better. The college coaches I have been around, look for versatility (as Al Mc stated, it is important at any age) in their recruiting process, in addition to the strong arm and bat. As most of you know, I coach a 12-U (2K ages) travel team, and we stress this to our players, and we are almost at the point that we could literally pull a line-up out of a hat and not miss a beat at any position (hey, I may try that our next scrimmage). The effects will be judged in a couple of years based on their success in middle school ball. My final thoughts on this subject: Joe McEwing, Rex Hudler, Tony Phillips, Pete Rose, Craig Biggio! JT
