Glove Break-In (Ouch w/ the Oven or Nuking It)

By: Bear

It really depends on the leather these
days for the 'treatments' you have
inquired about.

I know of a youngster who 'oiled' his
brand new infielders glove. After he
'ovened' it, his dad called and asked
if I could help. I had to laugh when
I learned about his 'salad making' experiences. But I was able to 'fix'
the awful looking glove to something
useful. (The dad ended up buying a
backup !)

Overall, I do not recommend the "Oven/
nor Microwave Treatment' for baseball gloves
or mitts. (Soccer balls yes, baseball gloves
no)

Other 'treatments' you may consider are:
a) Just Play Catch with the glove

b) Beat the glove with something (Fist, Bat, Dumbbell.........car.)

c) Dunk the glove in water to soften
the leather.
(I don't know about you, but when
Paul Cassanova (Senators)
suggested I do this with my brand new Rawlings Mitt, I had a hard time with it.)
But gee, that was almost 35 yrs ago
and I have 'dunked' a few since then. It
does work, but one needs to be very very
careful or you will 'ruin' the leather
and the glove)

d) Lanolin

One of few 'ol' timer shaving creams
left and in the 'cheap' seats, is
the one with the Red/Black Stripes
like the Barber Pole. (I am foggy
on the name, Bardahl maybe.

Most glove oils if used, should be
used sparingly, very sparingly, to
keep the glove from getting 'heavy'.

That's why the pro's use lanolin,
but most use nothing at all especially
those like Ozzie (future HoF) who liked
a 'tight glove' vs Nomar (who brings
his backup out frequently, what ever is
left of it.)

cheers
