Tournament season - how many innings/week for pitchers

By: Jeff T

I love the "closer" concept (even at 11)--and I think that its no coincidence that when we added one, we got back-to-back trophies (after 2+ years of trying).

Now, for your games, I'd get the championship game, first and foremost. Why save your stopper (or any other pitcher) when your playing for the BIG trophy.

How that plays out will obviously dictate the coach's strategy for the next tourney. Our's all start with pool play, so it is vital to win that first game--but try not to burn the innings.

Now, depending on how much day-off throwing your son is used to, he may be able to go 1-2 innings every day!! I am big on a great deal of throwing and off-mound pitching with my son, and he has the stamina to do that...
....but, as Jim J stated, individuals differ. So, even though the 35 may be good for your son, you can't delve into arbitrary pitch counts. (ahhhh--that's why we make the big bucks).

The travel team that picked up my son will be faced with a similar situation next weekend--as many as 7 games in 4 days (with the last 6 in 3 days)--and that is with the AAU limits.

Good luck to you and let us know how it all plays out. JT
